Monastic Gardens

A 5 x 15 minute series on the relationship between monastery gardens and the orders that own them. Someone wrote to me and said: "One of the most beautiful and thought provoking programmes I have ever heard."  It is presented by Peter France.

Rostrevor Monastery - a community of Benedictine monks living in Co Down, Northern Ireland.

The Garden of Gethsemene in the grounds of Mount St Bernard Abbey, a Cistercian abbey in Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire. This order is known as the Cistercians of the Strict Observance - or Trappists.

Loyola Hall, one of the retreat houses run by the Society or Jesus, or the Jesuits, near Liverpool.  The Jesuits are the largest order of priests.

The Poor Clares belong to the family of the Franciscans and are a female, enclosed order who follow the life set out by St Clare, a close friend of St Francis.  This programme is from one of their convents in Harwarden in N Wales.

The Dominicans are an order for men and women known as the Order of Preachers.  I went to a Dominican school in Stoke-on-Trent. This programme is from a convent in Stone, South Staffordshire.
