Green Pilgrimage Network - Assisi 2011

In November 2011 some of those responsible for running pilgrimage sites around the world, and from different faiths, came together in Assisi in Italy to share their plans for making pilgrimage a greener experience. It was run by the Alliance of Religions and Conservation and here is the website for the project.

I wrote an article in The Tablet called Greening the Pilgrim's Way about the event.

Assisi is a beautiful city with a very special atmosphere, it was a fitting host for this meeting green.  The meeting began with a beautiful celebration of dance and music from different faiths and I did the reading.  Over the following 2 days the delegates then laid out their own plans and shared experiences.

A handbook for pilgrim cities was published and can be downloaded from the ARC site.  If you can help make your own local holy site more green and sustainable for pilgrims to visit get in touch with ARC for advice.
